ACPSEA Successfully Hosts the Eastern Africa Greens Congress in Kigali, Rwanda
July 30, 2025
The Africa Center for Peace, Security and Environmental Affairs (ACPSEA) successfully held its first major project, the Eastern Africa Greens Congress, from 26 to 27 July 2025 in Kigali, Rwanda.
The event brought together delegates from five Eastern African countries—Somalia, Kenya, Burundi, Uganda, and Rwanda—to strengthen regional collaboration on environmental justice, peacebuilding, and sustainable development. This congress marked a new phase in regional dialogue, building on earlier efforts by green movements in Eastern Africa to coordinate environmental and peace initiatives.
Participants engaged in meaningful discussions on the role of green movements and civil society in addressing environmental degradation, regional insecurity, and the growing threat of climate change. The congress served as an interactive platform for sharing country-level experiences, building cross-border partnerships, and developing a joint regional strategy for environmental action and peacebuilding.
A highlight of the meeting was the agreement to establish the new regional headquarters in Rwanda. This milestone reflects the region’s commitment to effective coordination and recognizes Rwanda’s leadership in environmental sustainability and peace efforts. Delegates agreed to begin identifying a suitable site for the construction of the headquarters, which will serve as a hub for coordinating regional programs and policy engagement.
The Eastern Africa Greens Congress aligns with long-standing regional efforts to mainstream green principles, promote unity and cooperation, and encourage sustainable resource management across the region. These priorities echo the values championed by green political movements since their early congresses more than a decade ago, emphasizing community-driven solutions and inclusive participation in environmental governance.
The success of ACPSEA’s inaugural project was made possible through the support of the International Foundation GroenLinks–Netherlands, reflecting growing international confidence in regional cooperation and civil society leadership in Africa.
ACPSEA remains dedicated to advancing a shared vision of a peaceful, secure, and environmentally sustainable Africa. The organization continues to strengthen partnerships and foster dialogue that translates shared ideals into collective regional action.
